The Chaplain, Pastoral Care Department, provides spiritual care to patients, their loved ones, staff, and hospital constituencies using an inter-faith model, respecting the patient's belief and value system.

Requirements

• Master of Divinity degree, Master of Arts in Religion, a Master of Pastoral Counseling from an accredited school of theology, or Ordination required, or equivalent education and training.
• Endorsed by a faith tradition recognized by the US Department of Education.
• Successful completion of at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education recognized by the US Department of Education.
• 1-2 years Clergy or Chaplain experience required.
• Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient and family spiritual needs and assist them in utilizing their spiritual resources to cope with illness, trauma, and stress.
• Facilitate additional spiritual/religious support from community religious leaders, including specific sacramental or religious needs.
• Develop a plan of care and provide spiritual/emotional support, including listening, presence, prayer, reading sacred texts, ethical guidance, and sacraments.
• Advise manager of important patient/clinical issues.
• Respond to codes and traumas when designated as on-call chaplain.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Mentor CPE students and volunteers as assigned.
• Contribute to the wider community through publication, teaching, and research.
• Participate in teaching/lecturing on a regular or periodic basis.
• Participate in regular professional development activities and supervision.
• Participate in the department's plan for continuous quality improvement.
• Ensure a safe environment and effective communication with all age groups served by the Pastoral Care Department.
• Adhere to Standards of Practice of the Association of Professional Chaplains and the principles and practices of Outcome Oriented Chaplaincy.
• Function in a manner that reflects the mission and vision of the institution.
• Plan and lead worship opportunities, including interfaith memorial services, as assigned.
• Lead bereavement and spirituality/study/support groups as assigned.
• Document all chaplaincy activities in a timely manner according to department protocols.
• Complete office or administrative tasks as assigned, demonstrating computer literacy.
• Provide support to staff, individually or through institutional events, and after traumatic events and loss.
• Promote an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care among all chaplains.
• Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and facilitate communication between healthcare team members.
• Maintain a positive working relationship between the Pastoral Care Department and medical, nursing, and other staff.
• Serve on institutional committees as appointed.
