This is a volunteer position for a Fire District Chaplain. Chaplains provide an additional resource to employees, not a replacement for an individual’s church. They function independently and non-denominationally, without compromising their personally held beliefs and convictions, and do not promote doctrines specific to a church organization unless requested by the people involved. Communications with chaplains are confidential and are not released to Fire District employees or others. Employees may contact a chaplain directly without notifying a supervisor, or contact one through Fire District Administration. Chaplain duties include building relationships with district personnel; visiting stations and shifts; providing confidential counsel within their training and ability; and referring employees to the Employee Assistance Program or other qualified counselors and resources. On a rotating basis, the duty chaplain responds to public-assistance calls at an Incident Commander’s request, subject to Chaplain Coordinator approval and district needs. Responses may involve fatalities, imminent death, death notifications, or extended emergencies. Chaplains may also participate in critical incident stress debriefings, visit employees and family members in the hospital, maintain contact with off-duty injured employees, attend meetings and training, perform invocations and assist with employee funerals or weddings, and support district programs as requested.
