About The Position

The Arizona Department of Correction, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking a Chaplain to guide the religious accommodation of inmates. This will involve visiting and counseling inmates in their living spaces, work, recreation, and educational areas, including isolation/detention areas and inmates in protective segregation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: -Principles and practices of pastoral care and counseling -Religious publications or holy books pertinent to a variety of religions -Personal computer software programs sufficient to perform daily tasks -Public relations and public speaking

  • Ability to: -Work in a prison environment -Learn the Arizona Correctional Information System (ACIS) -Adhere to all departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as they apply to inmate grooming, litigation, and discipline -Comprehend various religions represented in the inmate population, including major tenets, religious service requirements, religious property requirements, and dietary requirements -Adapt to changing priorities
  • Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation and drug test.
  • Candidate MUST present proof of license or ordination or certification from their faith group at the time of application.
  • Candidate MUST present proof of denominational endorsement at time of appointment or within six months of the original hire date.
  • May require possession of, and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
  • In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
  • Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience conducting religious services, which include pastoral care, counseling, and teaching
  • Minimum of one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree from an accredited institution; accreditation as verifiable through the Council of Higher Education Association (CHEA.ORG)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts religious services and studies, memorial services, and other services as directed by the supervising Chaplain for the benefit of the inmates and/or staff
  • Coordinates, monitors, and documents religious accommodations and the performance and compliance of religious volunteers
  • Interacts with local church groups, visits clergy and the religious community on behalf of the Department with approval of, and under the direction of the supervising Chaplain
  • Confers with supervising chaplain for direction on appropriate responses to staff, volunteer, inmate, or public questions regarding religious programming, privileges, donations, and pastoral visits
  • Advises the Deputy Warden and security staff on any religious issues that may directly affect the inmates on an assigned unit
  • Maintains documentation and prepares articles and reports
  • Receives and delivers information to inmates and inmate families regarding deaths, serious illnesses, and overnight hospitalizations
  • Evaluates and responds to inmate requests for special religious services, diets, or privileges
  • May be required to drive on state business
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
