About The Position

The Applied Engineering team is part of Qnity Electronics' central Engineering Science and Analytical organization. It partners with Qnity businesses to address complex engineering challenges and support application development, product development, process improvement, and technical decision-making. Qnity is seeking a CFD and Multiphysics Modeling Engineer to develop and apply computational fluid dynamics, heat-transfer, mass-transfer, and related multiphysics models across its businesses. The engineer will work with scientists, engineers, and product-development teams to define technical problems, choose suitable modeling approaches, and translate simulation results into practical engineering guidance. A key objective is to build confidence in simulation-driven decisions by ensuring models are physically meaningful, numerically reliable, appropriately validated, and aligned with business needs and program timelines. The role calls for strong fundamentals, sound engineering judgment, curiosity, and the ability to build productive relationships across a broad technical organization.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience applying CFD, heat-transfer, or multiphysics modeling to engineering problems; relevant graduate research may count toward this experience.
  • Strong foundation in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, numerical methods, and mathematical modeling of physical systems.
  • Familiarity with turbulence modeling, multiphase flow, conjugate heat transfer, species transport, or other coupled transport phenomena.
  • Experience with model setup, meshing, solver configuration, numerical troubleshooting, postprocessing, and interpretation of simulation results.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or a similar programming environment for simulation customization, workflow automation, data processing, and analysis.
  • Familiarity with model verification and validation, convergence assessment, sensitivity analysis, model calibration, parameter estimation, or uncertainty quantification.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
  • Ability to balance scientific rigor, business priorities, available information, and project timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, with a strong emphasis on computational fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and transport phenomena.
  • Expertise in CFD with coupled heat, mass, and transport phenomena.
  • Advanced proficiency with commercial CFD or multiphysics simulation software; experience with ANSYS Fluent or COMSOL Multiphysics is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with turbulence modeling, multiphase flow, conjugate heat transfer, species transport, or other coupled transport phenomena.
  • Ability to develop user-defined functions or comparable custom model extensions.
  • High proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar programming environments for simulation customization, workflow automation, data processing, and analysis.
  • Experience with simulation tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, Abaqus, OpenFOAM, or comparable software.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a central technical resource for application and product-development programs involving CFD, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and related multiphysics phenomena.
  • Work with scientists, engineers, and business teams to translate application, product, and process challenges into clear modeling objectives.
  • Determine modeling scope, assumptions, dimensionality, and fidelity based on governing physics, available information, business objectives, and timelines.
  • Assess when modeling can support a program and identify when additional data, experiments, or other technical approaches are needed.
  • Model coupled phenomena such as fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, particle transport, electrochemistry, and mechanics as appropriate.
  • Develop and apply physics-based models involving fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and multiphysics phenomena.
  • Select and evaluate governing equations, physical models, material properties, boundary conditions, meshing approaches, and solver strategies.
  • Apply appropriate methods for turbulence, multiphase flow, conjugate heat transfer, species transport, and other transport phenomena.
  • Develop user-defined functions or other custom model extensions when standard software capabilities are insufficient.
  • Balance model fidelity, accuracy, computational efficiency, available data, and project timing.
  • Evaluate model assumptions, numerical stability, convergence, mesh and time-step independence, sensitivity, solution robustness, and uncertainty as appropriate.
  • Partner with experimental scientists and engineers to define data needs and validation experiments, calibrate models, and compare predictions with measurements and physical observations.
  • Communicate model accuracy, assumptions, uncertainty, and limitations.
  • Interpret simulation results to identify physical mechanisms, key performance drivers, and design tradeoffs.
  • Translate modeling insights into recommendations for product design, application development, process optimization, experimental planning, and technical decision-making.
  • Communicate modeling approaches, results, and recommendations to modeling specialists and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Build relationships with scientists and engineers across Qnity's businesses and increase awareness of modeling capabilities in the central Engineering Science and Analytical organization.
  • Identify opportunities for modeling to contribute to application and product development, process improvement, customer support, and innovation.
  • Recognize technical challenges beyond CFD and heat transfer, including structural mechanics and other engineering disciplines, and connect teams with appropriate experts.
  • Develop reusable modeling methods, automated workflows, best practices, and technical documentation for multiple programs and businesses.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and the long-term development of Qnity's CFD, heat-transfer, transport-phenomena, and multiphysics capabilities.
