About The Position

Perform quality assurance/control inspections for structural and miscellaneous steel welding activities. This role involves performing Certified Welding Inspection (CWI) services for commercial, industrial, and/or public works construction projects. The inspector will review approved construction drawings, welding procedures, shop drawings, and project specifications. Key responsibilities include communicating with various project stakeholders regarding inspection findings and compliance, preparing detailed inspection reports, and mentoring junior inspectors. The role also requires ensuring compliance with contract documents, specifications, approved welding procedures, and applicable codes such as AWS and IBC. Verification of welder qualifications and welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR) is crucial, as is performing visual weld inspections in accordance with AWS D1.1 and other relevant codes. Coordination of nondestructive testing (NDT) activities and review of test results are also part of the job. The inspector must document non-conforming work and initiate corrective actions, while maintaining current AWS CWI certification and other required credentials.

Requirements

  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, welding symbols, shop drawings, specifications, and welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and inspection assignments
  • Ability to work independently in the field and communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in welding inspection, quality assurance, or quality control for construction projects preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, Associate’s degree with relevant technical experience, or equivalent combination of education and welding inspection experience preferred
  • Additional certifications such as ICC Structural Steel and Bolting, ICC Structural Welding, NDT certifications, or other applicable inspection certifications preferred
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, applicable building codes, and industry standards related to structural steel welding and inspection

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality assurance/control inspections for structural and miscellaneous steel welding activities
  • Perform Certified Welding Inspection (CWI) services for commercial, industrial, and/or public works construction projects
  • Review approved construction drawings, welding procedures, shop drawings, and project specifications
  • Communicate with welders, foremen, superintendents, project managers, engineers, and building inspectors regarding inspection findings and compliance issues
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports documenting compliance with contract documents, approved drawings, AWS codes, and applicable standards
  • Mentor and train junior inspectors on welding inspection procedures, code requirements, and documentation standards
  • Inspect and verify welding activities for compliance with approved plans, specifications, and applicable welding codes
  • Ensure welding work is performed in accordance with contract documents, specifications, RFC plans, and approved welding procedures
  • Identify and document non-conforming welding work and initiate corrective action procedures as required
  • Ensure contractors comply with project specifications, approved welding procedures, and applicable AWS/IBC requirements
  • Verify welder qualifications and welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR)
  • Perform visual weld inspections in accordance with AWS D1.1 and other applicable codes
  • Coordinate nondestructive testing (NDT) activities and review test results
  • Document weld discontinuities, deficiencies, and corrective actions
  • Maintain current AWS CWI certification and other required credentials
