About The Position

The Certified Welding Inspector is responsible for ensuring that manufactured products are welded to the applicable ASME code or API Specification. The Technician will ensure that welders are welding within the correct parameters, and that only certified welders are performing the work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred plus 4 years welding experience in relative industry/field.
  • Keeps a current Certified Weld Inspector qualification with the applicable endorsements for the work that is being performed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience reading and interpreting documents such as charts, procedure manuals and job instructions with basic problem solving skills.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Accurately reads and records measurements using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools, as well as read a tape-measure.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Experience using hand tools, such as wrenches and screw-drivers, and power tools such as grinders and drills.
  • Ability to operate computer and computer software, to include Microsoft Office products and department equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • It is preferred that the CWI works toward obtaining certification as a API Spec 653 Tank Inspector.
  • Quality Control and ISO experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs hydro tests, air tests, PT per Section V ASME BPVC test and daily weld progressions.
  • Observes weld tests and other welding in process to ensure procedures are being followed.
  • Performs quality control inspections of products ensuring that they are welded to spec.
  • Operates overhead cranes and various lifting devices, grinders, hand tools, band saws, hydraulic press, calipers, micrometer and various weld gauges.
  • Performs hydro-test on pressure vessels.
  • Identifies heat code numbers on materials and records them.
  • Reads blue prints with weld symbols and dimensions and maintains required records.
  • Understands Section II, V, and IX ASME BPVC and ensures compliance.
  • Identifies and demonstrates safety precautions as needed and points out problems, explains how to fix them, and follows up to ensure that it was fixed.
  • Inspects inbound material and parts. Notates flaws on receiving reports and issues hold tags if items are to be rejected and communicates this information with the purchasing department so that returns can be coordinated.
  • Assists QC Manager with performing calibration/verification of the welding machines. Maintains all required documentation to ensure traceability to National Standards.
  • Performs weld and QC inspection on Steel Tanks to the applicable code (API Spec 12F, API Spec 650, API 620 or other applicable code). Assists in dimensionally verifying tanks to ensure that all API 12F and API 650 requirements have been met.
  • Performs required weld inspection and testing to B31.3 (B.31.1 or other codes when applicable) for sheds/skids and other process equipment.
  • Reviews Material Test Reports and verifies items meet required specifications.
  • Coordinates with QC Administrator to schedule all required NDT inspections.
  • Assigns internal tracking numbers to materials and components when applicable, performs in-process quality audits, assists with Quality Management Systems audits of various areas as required by the QMS Manager.
  • Reviews blueprints and answers questions about tolerance or weld sizes. Ensures AI has inspected when required and checks anything marked after inspection.
  • Assists QC Manager with performing weld tests during interview process, updates welder qualification log, and issues welder certificates. Ensures that all welders performing welds are qualified in the process.
  • Drives a forklift and uses a hoist when needed.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that tools, materials and equipment are secure at end of day.
  • Performs additional duties as needed.
