About The Position

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Certified Surgical Technologist performs a wide variety of patient care activities within the operating room while supporting the medical and nursing plan of care. The role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment needed during surgical procedures; understands the procedures being performed; anticipates the surgeon’s needs; and helps ensure quality patient care and maintenance of the sterile field. The employee exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and maintains strict confidentiality.

Requirements

• Certification as a Surgical Technologist is required.
• BLS certification is required.
• Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served on the unit.

Responsibilities

• Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, including scrubs, gowns, and gloves.
• Set up the sterile table with the instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications or solutions needed for the procedure.
• Perform appropriate counts with the circulator before the operation and before the incision is closed.
• Gown and glove the surgeon and assistants.
• Help drape the sterile field.
• Pass instruments and other items to the surgeon during procedures.
• Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures.
• Prepare sterile dressings.
• Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Assist other team members with terminal cleaning of the room.
• Help prepare the room for the next patient.
• Obtain appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedures.
• Open sterile supplies.
• Properly care for specimens.
• Secure dressings after incision closure.
• Maintain compliance with required RQI.
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
• Exercise strict confidentiality and exhibit the MHS Standards of Excellence.
