About The Position

This position is for a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) in the Operating Room, working full-time. The role involves assisting with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment, and maintaining positive customer relations. The technologist will demonstrate competency and possess the technical skills appropriate for assigned cases, utilizing that knowledge in assisting others. The position performs various duties within the scope of responsibility and is accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for surgical preparation of surgical procedures, including checking daily assignments, reviewing surgical preference sheets, utilizing resources for supplies, checking table readiness, and obtaining physician’s special instruments and sutures.
  • Ensures communication with the surgeon prior to the start of the case if any supplies and/or equipment are unavailable.
  • Responsible for the set-up of sterile instrumentation, supplies, and equipment on assigned procedures, demonstrating and maintaining aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling special supplies and equipment and assures proper functioning.
  • Is knowledgeable of the specifics of the surgical procedure and able to perform tasks in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Effectively communicates pertinent information to relief personnel for safe continuity of care.
  • Promotes an environment of cooperation and teamwork through prompt attendance, courteous communication, sharing information, flexibility, and adherence to break/lunch policies.
  • Under the surgeon’s supervision, assists with suctioning secretions, holding retractors, assisting with skin closure, cutting sutures, and irrigating wounds.
  • Circulates for operative procedures under the supervision of an R.N.
  • Assists with patient care at the end of the surgical procedure, including preparing and cleansing the operative site, connecting drainage tubes, assisting with sterile dressing application, and assisting with patient transfer.
  • Responsible for knowing and using good body mechanics.
  • Processes case carts, disassembles table contents and instruments, and places them in proper receptacles for cleaning.
  • Thoroughly sprays dirty instruments prior to transport to SPD and sends appropriate instruments to SPD or clean-up room for terminal cleaning.
  • Disposes of trash and linen appropriately.
  • Assists in expediting case turnaround time and assists with cleaning of tables, floors, etc.
  • Promotes a safe environment for patients and healthcare members by ensuring correct instrument counts, identifying and transferring surgical specimens, performing safety checks on equipment, correctly preparing and labeling medications, keeping the operative field free of unnecessary items, receiving instruments from the surgeon, keeping instruments clean, removing unnecessary articles from the operative field, and following universal precautions.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior by learning from experiences, serving as a role model, acknowledging peer accomplishments, participating in committee work, identifying learning needs, and meeting emergency needs through the on-call system.
  • Exercises safe judgment in decision-making.
  • Functions as a Patient Advocate by being aware of physical and emotional needs, assisting any patient in need, protecting patient’s dignity and privacy, and putting patient’s welfare above personal consideration.
  • Participates in educational activities of the unit, including assisting in the orientation of new personnel, participating in and attending unit in-services.
