The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is personally accountable for providing patient and employee safety at all times, utilizing safe practices and procedures in surgical patient care. This role involves assisting co-workers in resolution, and identifying, mitigating, and escalating potential patient and employee safety issues. The CST reviews the surgery plan and appropriately prepares for the procedure utilizing advanced knowledge, contacting Perioperative Coordinators and/or Lead Certified Surgical Technologist if additions or changes are needed. The role requires demonstrating understanding of advanced technical skills for patient and family care, and the ability to effectively perform these skills. The CST independently scrubs surgical procedures in all surgical specialties, applying knowledge and skills to work in any general or specialty service. Problem-solving related to the procedure, making appropriate decisions, prioritizing planned and unplanned events, and mitigating potential/actual problems are key aspects of this role. Procedure preparation is focused on cost-effective provision of supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care with positive outcomes. The CST anticipates instrument, supply, and implant needs based on knowledge and prior experience, and participates in orientation and training programs to attain competency in complex cases and procedures. Advanced knowledge of technology, computers, electrical safety, and robotic equipment as applicable to procedure type is required, and the CST mentors others in equipment safety and knowledge. The role also requires applying advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology, particularly in the specialty of whole organ transplantation and the vascular system/structures for optimum surgical patient care, as well as knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures.
