Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), may include specialized or vocational courses

Responsibilities

  • Prepares room before the case and breaks down at the end of case to facilitate rapid case turnover in preparation for the next patient.
  • Setup sterile table, checks equipment, instruments, medications/ solutions and supplies needed preoperatively for the surgical procedure and communicates needs to the circulator.
  • Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities.
  • Demonstrates safe practice and complies with all standards concerning infection control and safety.
  • Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Demonstrates competency, safety, and use of standard precautions to those tasks and aspects of patient care assigned per OR standard.
  • Identifies, assembles, maintains, and demonstrates proper use of instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Performs initial, second, and final counts (including at relief) in accordance with AORN standards and hospital policy.
  • Handles and passes all instruments and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Verify the name of the specimen and transport media with the surgeon and circulating nurse prior to leaving the surgical field.
  • Obtains necessary supplies and equipment to support the surgical procedure.
  • Maintains knowledge of the location of implants, supplies, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub and dons gowns and gloves in accordance with AORN and hospital policy for self, assistants, and surgeons.
  • Anticipates and responds appropriately to the needs of the surgeon.
  • Reviews, follows, and updates surgeon preference cards in collaboration with CN III.
