Requirements

  • Graduate of a surgical technology program
  • Graduate of an Accredited Surgical First Assisting program
  • Surgical Technician certification is required
  • First Assist certification required
  • 3 – 5 years of operating room experience
  • Current American Heart Association BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Provide surgical first assisting within the Operating Room and other similar settings.
  • Assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for Certified Surgical Techs without CSTFA education and training.
  • Function interdependently with the surgeon during surgical procedures.
  • Apply knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient.
  • Provide patient care for all ages.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the perioperative team during the Perioperative phase as needed.
  • The CSTFA does not concurrently function as the Scrub Tech.
