About The Position

The Certified Surgical Tech maintains the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. This role assists the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery. The position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. The individual must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. The role involves preparing patients for surgery, assisting with the operation, and cleaning/restocking the operating room. Adherence to The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and providing age-appropriate care are essential. Non-essential functions include interacting with internal and external customers, handling sensitive information, understanding healthcare regulations like HIPAA, and performing other assigned duties.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the sterile field in the operating room, utilizing proper aseptic techniques to prevent contamination and infection.
  • Assist the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.
  • Set up the operating room before an operation, organizing sterile tables with surgical instruments, equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.
  • Check, adjust, and operate equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain a supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during the operation.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
  • Transport and position patients on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Scrub hands and arms, and put on sterile operating room attire to work within the sterile field.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, and providing sterile items efficiently.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Hold retractors, cut sutures, and apply dressings as directed.
  • Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Adhere to The Joint Commission (TJC) on professional standards.
  • Attend hospital in-service training sessions as directed.
  • Provide age-appropriate care for all age groups.
  • Serve internal co-workers and external customers, clients, patients, contractors, and vendors.
  • Access and/or work with sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Apply policies and procedures.
  • Utilize knowledge of Business Office Standards and Recommended Practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
