About The Position

The Surgical Technician (also known as Operating Room Technician) provides essential support to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and perioperative staff during surgical procedures. This role is responsible for preparing the operating room, ensuring sterile conditions, and providing the necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment to facilitate safe and efficient surgeries. The Surgical Technician assists with patient positioning, maintains sterile fields, anticipates surgical team needs, and supports patient safety throughout procedures. Additionally, this role ensures proper handling, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment, adheres to infection control and safety protocols, and contributes to a smooth, coordinated workflow in the operating room.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or equivalent vocational/technical training required.
Credential as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within three (3) months of hire.
Knowledge of sterile techniques, aseptic practices, and infection control standards to ensure a safe surgical environment.
Knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, including their proper use, handling, and maintenance.
Knowledge of surgical procedures and protocols across multiple specialties to support the operating room team.
Skill in preparing and maintaining sterile fields, including organizing instrument tables and passing instruments efficiently during procedures.
Skill in assisting surgeons and surgical staff by anticipating procedural needs and responding quickly to requests.
Ability to monitor and maintain patient safety, including proper positioning, handling sharps, and participating in the surgical timeout process.
Ability to communicate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other members of the surgical team to ensure coordinated patient care.
Ability to perform under pressure, prioritize tasks, and adjust to changing priorities in a fast-paced operating room environment.
Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently independently with ability to assist with heavier weights (100+ pounds) with team lift or mechanical equipment.
Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.
Requires frequent use of computer.
Must demonstrate manual dexterity.
Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, including but not limited to sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
Employee eligible for Hepatitis B Vaccination if desired.
Must be able to perform the primary duties and responsibilities of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

Prepare the Operating Room (OR) by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, equipment, and supplies in accordance with surgeon preferences and procedural requirements.
Assist in creating and maintaining a sterile environment throughout surgical procedures by following aseptic technique to open sterile supplies, set-up procedures, and organize the sterile instrument table to ensure efficiency and minimize risk of contamination or infection.
Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgery, ensuring safety and comfort.
Handle and operate surgical instruments, equipment, and devices safely and effectively during procedures, while passing instruments, sponges, sutures, and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants as needed.
Participate in the pre-procedure timeout process in accordance with protocol and accurately track instruments, sponges, and sharps before, during, and after surgery to ensure patient safety and prevent retention of foreign objects.
Anticipate surgical needs, coordinate intraoperative workflow, and collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and perioperative staff to optimize patient outcomes and procedural efficiency.
Assist with post-operative room turnover, including cleaning and disinfecting the OR, sterilizing instruments, and restocking supplies.
Record surgical supplies used, equipment malfunctions, and any other relevant perioperative information according to hospital policy.
Identify opportunities for, and actively participate in, performance and quality improvement activities to enhance clinical outcomes, healthcare delivery, and patient safety.
Participate in the equitable rotation of after-hours call coverage, including weekends and holidays, as applicable to designated clinical areas.
Will perform as a surgical scrub tech in every specialty.
