About The Position

The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) assists providers and staff by collecting pertinent patient information needed to determine physical and psychological needs. This includes addressing and identifying health problems, performing selected treatments, aiding in diagnostic testing and/or procedures, assisting with non-invasive and invasive surgical procedures, and routine clinical duties. The CSA functions as a member of the healthcare team with responsibilities commensurate with training, scope of practice, and demonstrated competencies. Direct patient care is provided to patients of varying ages.

Requirements

  • Associates or Vocational degree from an accredited Surgical Technician program
  • Certificate of completion of a Surgical Assist program
  • Hold CSA (Certified Surgical Assistant) from NSAA (National Surgical Assistant Association) or NCCSA (National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants)
  • Current Kentucky CSA license (KCSA) from Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure (KBML)
  • Basic Life Support certification
  • Minimum two years of direct patient care experience preferred
  • Position requires ability to occasionally push/pull and lift objects up to or greater than 50 pounds.
  • Position requires ability to constantly perform simple motor skills such as moving from area to area in the building, on campus, and/or off campus.
  • Position requires ability to frequently perform moderately difficult manipulative skills.
  • Position requires ability to constantly perform gross body movement such as stooping, bending, etc., to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination.
  • Position requires ability to frequently move from department to department, building to building, and to sit and/or for prolonged periods of time.
  • Position requires ability to constantly see objects closely as in reading and viewing paper records and computer screen.
  • Position requires ability to constantly hear normal sounds with some background noise.
  • Position requires ability to constantly concentrate on minimal and fine detail with some interruption.
  • Position requires ability to frequently tend to tasks/functions for more than 60 minutes at a time and to frequently tend to tasks/functions for less than 10 minutes at a time.
  • Position requires ability to frequently understand and relate to concepts behind specific ideas, to frequently understand and relate to the theories behind several related concepts.
  • Position requires ability to constantly remember multiple tasks/functions given to self and others over long periods of time.
  • Position requires ability to constantly communicate verbally and in writing using advanced level vocabulary and advanced writing skills.
  • Position requires frequent exposure to blood, body tissue or fluids, and occasional exposure to hazardous materials and dust.
  • Position may be stressful and demanding.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to BHDMG and BHD policies and procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate licensure or certification as required for position.
  • Maintains annual competencies/skills for both medical group and hospital locations as assigned based on job role, scope of practice, and specialty.
  • Attends mandatory meetings, in-services, and training courses in accordance with BHDMG and BHD guidelines.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, specific job-related hazards, and national patient safety goals as applicable.
  • Ensures positive customer relations interactions. Presents with positive and compassionate attitude Manages difficult or emotional customer situations appropriately
  • Assists providers in medical clinic and hospital as assigned and appropriate.
  • Maintains clean, safe, and compliant clinical space.
  • Prepares maintenance requests as needed.
  • Respects and promotes patient rights, maintains confidentiality, and exhibits friendly and helpful behaviors at all times.
  • Responds to emergencies in an appropriate manner and according to policy.
  • Performs quality control and safety checks, and records data as necessary.
  • Reports any departmental/staff/operational issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Renders appropriate patient care and treatment under direction and order of MD, PA, or NP: Assists with procedures and examinations. Includes both invasive and non-invasive procedures as well as assisting surgeons in the surgical suite of BHD when required and appropriate. CSA scope of practice allows for more advanced surgical tasks. These tasks may include: incision assistance, tissue manipulation, placing tourniquets, suturing/wound closure, and other tasks as assigned and supervised by surgeon.
  • Obtains appropriate patient information for clinic visit/procedure.
  • Verifies patient identity
  • Reviews patient allergies
  • Reconciles medication list
  • Obtains vital signs
  • Performs appropriate testing as directed.
  • Completes all procedures and treatments ordered by provider with accuracy and consideration for patient comfort.
  • Completes all documentation in a professional and timely manner. Includes patient messages and requests.
  • Assists patients and families with educational needs and provides assistance and/or referral to additional resources as warranted.
  • Schedules appointments/surgical procedures.
  • Assures that insurance and demographic information is accurate and updated as necessary.
  • Provides clinical information to appropriate parties for insurance authorizations as applicable.
  • Answers telephones as needed.
  • Validates appropriate patient forms are updated and on file in EMR.
  • Assists with responsibilities of office flow.
  • Performs all testing with accuracy and under order of MD/PA/NP.
  • Performs all quality testing per department policies and records data with accuracy.
  • Documents all lab testing and results as appropriate.
  • Notifies patient of lab results under the directive of provider
  • All equipment is cleaned/maintained as outlined in departmental policy.
  • Infection control is practiced at all times, including patient areas, instruments, rooms, and equipment.
  • Appropriate records are maintained per departmental policy.
  • Supplies are ordered, stored, and restocked as necessary.
  • Completes all safety/clinical oriented tasks in appropriate timeframe (ie: daily, weekly, monthly, etc.)
  • Maintains a positive attitude and contributes to a positive working environment.
