Certified Special Education Substitute Teacher
About The Position
Kokua Education is hiring Special Education substitute teachers to support KIPP schools across the Houston area during the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers lead classrooms and help create safe, supportive learning environments, while choosing assignments and locations that suit them. Assignments may be daily or long-term, and schedules vary by school. Most start between 7:00–8:00 AM and finish between 3:45–4:45 PM; candidates are told the schedule before accepting an assignment. Substitute teachers may work up to five days per week and can pursue assignments close to home. The role also includes supporting the campus throughout the school day as needed, such as supervising lunch or recess, monitoring halls and bathrooms, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Kokua offers weekly pay of $176 per day for daily assignments and $197 per day for long-term assignments, a W-2, access to a support team from 6 AM to 8 PM every day, and the possibility of gaining access to full-time positions at high-performing K–12 schools. Out-of-pocket costs are reimbursed after 10 teaching assignments.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of classroom teaching experience; special education experience is preferred.
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification in Special Education (EC–12); proof of certification is required.
- Confidence managing a classroom of students.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Strong belief that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.
- Ability to pass state and federal background checks.
