About The Position

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will perform all duties and tasks under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist. The CRNA may be assigned to various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and to different ORs and specialties as needed. The role involves performing safe anesthesia care, including pre-operative assessment, administration of anesthetic techniques, patient monitoring, and assisting in post-operative care. The position requires adherence to current nursing, anesthesia, and critical care techniques, and involves detailed documentation of patient care. The CRNA will also be involved in selected educational, supervisory, and administrative tasks, including the supervision of student anesthetists.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
Graduation from an accredited school of nurse anesthesia
Valid California RN license
Valid California Nurse Anesthetist license
Current certification by National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)
Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification by the American Heart Association
Skill in performing pre-operative assessment of surgical patients
Understanding interactions of pre-operative drug therapy with proposed anesthetic plan and agents for all age groups
Identification of abnormalities on physical examination which pose potential problems in anesthesia management
Understanding the medical indications for delay of elective surgery and for pre-operative specialty consultation
Ability to explain the proposed anesthetic technique, alternatives, risks and problems, thus obtaining proper documented legal informed consent prior to the administration of anesthesia
Ability to properly and completely document significant information to form an anesthesia record of pre-operative, intra-operative and postoperative events
Knowledge of pharmacology, dosage, side effects and contraindications of all drugs currently employed in anesthesia practice at UCI
Skill in performing all techniques of monitored, regional and general anesthesia commonly employed at UCI for all age categories
Knowledge of cardiac, respiratory, neuro, endocrine and renal physiology as they relate to intra-operative events and management
Ability to perform selected educational supervisory and administrative tasks, including supervision of student anesthetists when assigned, and assessment of orientation and progress
Must be able to provide proof of work authorization

Responsibilities

Perform safe anesthesia care under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist.
Conduct pre-operative assessments of surgical patients.
Administer all types of anesthetic and techniques.
Monitor patients intra-operatively.
Provide for a safe intra-operative course and emergence.
Assist as necessary in post-operative care.
Determine patient need and indication for various monitoring modalities.
Safely insert venous and arterial monitoring lines and devices under medical direction.
Identify adverse effects of all anesthesia techniques and initiate emergency treatment.
Recognize airway abnormalities and associated anesthesia implications.
Perform airway management techniques, including laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation.
Identify the required safe level of insensibility or narcosis for each patient and surgical procedure.
Recognize return of consciousness and reflexes signaling safe emergence from anesthesia.
Transport patients to the recovery room and provide informed reports to medical personnel.
Recognize post-operative complications of anesthesia and initiate emergency treatment as directed.
Assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other emergency situations.
Perform selected educational, supervisory, and administrative tasks.
Supervise student anesthetists when assigned.
Assess orientation and progress of student anesthetists.
