About The Position

Provides anesthesia services, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care to patients. This includes the induction and maintenance of anesthesia, support of life functions, recording of events, and responding to abnormal patient responses. The role also involves pre-anesthesia functions such as patient assessment and equipment checks, and post-anesthesia duties including patient observation, pain management, and reporting complications. The CRNA is responsible for narcotic accounting and distribution, responding to emergencies like Code Blue/Code 4, and may assist with difficult IV insertions. They may administer anesthesia under surgeon supervision, provide labor analgesia, and maintain knowledge of current practices and standards. The position also involves patient positioning and transporting, and potentially acting as an instructor for student nurse anesthetists. A key aspect is demonstrating age-specific knowledge and skills for patient care.

Requirements

Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices
Nurse Anesthetist certification (CRNA) issued by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists
Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber license issued by the state in which the team member practices
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration issued by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
Master's Degree in Nursing
Must be able to fulfill department schedule needs, which may include 24/7 call and weekend coverage, as needed.
Must have functional vision and hearing.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
Will be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines.
Will be exposed to the following hazards on a continuous basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids.
Will be required to wear gloves, goggles and gowns on an as-needed basis.
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently during work shift.
Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

Responsibilities

Provides anesthesia services, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care to patients.
Performs pre-anesthesia functions including determining that an appropriate pre-anesthetic examination has been made by a physician, ensuring relevant tests are completed, and performing a thorough patient assessment.
Checks the readiness, availability, cleanliness, sterility, and working conditions of all equipment used in the administration of anesthetic agents prior to administering anesthesia.
Performs post-anesthesia duties including remaining with the patient until safe transfer of care, advising on post-anesthetic care, and administering post-operative epidural pain relief and other analgesia.
Responsible for narcotic accounting and distribution.
Responds to life threatening, Code Blue/Code 4 and respiratory emergencies if available by establishing and maintaining an airway under the direction of a physician.
Assists nursing units with difficult intravenous (IV) insertions when requested, when available and when attempts by other professionals have been unsuccessful.
May administer anesthesia under the supervision of the operating surgeon.
May provide labor analgesia in the Birth Day Center.
Maintains knowledge of scientific theory, research findings, current practice and applicable standards.
May participate in departmental improvement processes and ASC processes when appropriate.
Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
May act as a clinical and/or didactic instructor for student nurse anesthesia students.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
