About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role operates under the supervision of the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor. Responsibilities include computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for patients ranging from newborns to geriatrics. Processing of various specimen types (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank) and specimens for referral to reference laboratories is also a key function. Additional duties involve stocking and ordering routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work areas and equipment, processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation, and potentially assisting with sample pick-up, sorting, and delivery. The role may involve working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts, and the technician may be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead. Other tasks may be assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
  • BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

  • Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for blood specimen collection.
  • Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
  • Demonstrate adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
  • Exhibit good communication skills and telephone etiquette.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique and equipment use for all age groups.
  • Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
  • Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stock and order routine supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
  • Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation.
  • Assist with sample pick-up at hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, and putting away samples.
  • Assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/delivery, faxing, answering phone, and handling product deliveries.
  • Work multi-departments or night/graveyard shifts.
  • May be delegated as a Phlebotomy Lead.
  • Perform other tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the department manager/director.
