The Certified Phlebotomy Technician II primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor. The CPT II performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. They possess adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory and demonstrate good communication skills and telephone etiquette. The technician demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients. They process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens, as well as specimens for referral to reference laboratories. Additionally, they stock and order routine supplies, maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas, and process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. This role may also involve picking up samples at the hospital/OR, assisting lab specialties in sorting and putting away samples, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pick up/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and handling product deliveries. The position may require working in multiple departments or on night/graveyard shifts, and may perform point-of-care testing after training and documented competency. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
