The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory. This role operates under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. The PT I is responsible for various duties including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical tasks. They must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and exhibit proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment usage for all age groups. Processing of various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank, and referral to reference laboratories) is a key responsibility. Additionally, the role involves stocking routine supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work areas and equipment, and processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. The position may also involve assisting with sample pick-up, sorting samples, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail handling, faxing, answering phones, and managing product deliveries. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
