The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and utilize proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment for collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients. Responsibilities include processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking routine supplies, and maintaining the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas. The technician will also process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation and may assist with sample pick-up at the hospital/OR, sorting samples for analysis, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pick-up/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and handling product deliveries. Additional tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.
