About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician primarily performs skin puncture or venipuncture on patients of all ages for the purpose of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical laboratory and is under the supervision of the Laboratory Director / Manager / Supervisor. This role involves computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology, demonstrate good communication and telephone etiquette, and utilize proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment for collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients. Responsibilities include processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, blood bank), processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking and ordering supplies, maintaining cleanliness of work areas and equipment, and processing/loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation. Additional duties may include picking up samples, assisting lab specialties, assisting pathology, inventory management, replenishing and ordering supplies, mail pick-up/delivery, faxing, answering phones, and handling product deliveries. The role may also involve working in multiple departments or shifts, potentially serving as a Phlebotomy Lead, and performing other tasks assigned by management.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, or equivalent, required.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or equivalent on-the-job training with documented competency required.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician required.
• BLS certification within forty-five days of hire and maintained current, according to hospital requirement.

• Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation.
• Assist with picking up samples at hospital/OR.
• Assist lab specialty in sorting samples for analysis and putting away samples.
• Assist pathology.
• Manage inventory and replenish supplies.
• Order supplies.
• Handle mail pick-up/delivery.
• Fax documents.
• Answer phones.
• Handle product deliveries.
• Potentially work multi-departments or night/graveyard shifts.
• Potentially serve as a Phlebotomy Lead.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the department manager/director.
