About The Position

Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines, the Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. They fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist and perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties. The specific duties may vary depending on the work location (e.g., outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. This role offers a career pathway with increasing responsibilities and competencies across three levels: Pharmacy Technician I, II, and III.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire.
  • Permanent Michigan Pharmacy Tech licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
  • Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings with pharmacists, hospital personnel, and external customers.
  • Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers.
  • Self-motivation, accuracy, and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and provide effective timely follow-up.
  • Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually.
  • Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
  • Able to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan (for Technician II and III).
  • Internal applicants must have no current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0 (for Technician II and III).
  • Valid driver's license may be needed for some job functions.

Nice To Haves

  • 3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
  • If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred (for Pharmacy Technician I).
  • Students currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy with a valid pharmacy intern license are not required to have Pharmacy Technician Certification.
  • Active professional organization involvement (for Technician III).
  • Mentoring, leadership, or ownership roles on projects/activities within the department or organization (for Technician III).

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures.
  • Interpret, transcribe, and prepare medication(s) for dispensing.
  • Fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist.
  • Perform a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties.
  • Maintain competency in core areas specific to the work location and shift assignment.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served for direct patient care roles.
  • Outpatient/retail pharmacy duties may include: prescription processing, inventory management (re-stocking, rotation of stock, expired medication removal), performing prescription sales transactions, answering phone calls, prioritizing and processing orders, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, and documenting as required.
  • Hospital pharmacy duties may include: inventory management, delivery of supplies and medications to nursing units, operating medication carousels, answering phone calls, packaging/repackaging medications, assisting in receiving medication deliveries, preparing non-sterile medication compounds, completing assigned inspections of medication storage locations, prioritizing and processing orders, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area and documenting as required.
  • Pharmacy Technician II specific duties may include: outpatient pharmacy purchasing of supplies and medications, functioning as an OR Technician, ED Technician, or Decentralized Pharmacy Technician.
  • Hospital or infusion pharmacy specific duties for Technician II may include: assisting the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications; utilizing the teach back method and providing patient medication education under supervision; performing sterile medication compounding (including parenteral nutrition preparation); running and maintaining pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment; assisting the pharmacist in reviewing pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight, and reviewing patient lab reports.
  • Pharmacy Technician III specific duties may include: supporting the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds), including obtaining patient home medication histories and coordinating delivery; specialty pharmacy program support (shipping, medication ordering, inventory management); chemotherapy compounding; advanced home medication histories for admission reconciliation; advanced pharmacy buying; advanced automated dispensing cabinet configuration, maintenance, and optimization; controlled substance diversion monitoring; advanced inventory management; departmental scheduling.
  • Additional criteria for Technician III may include active professional organization involvement, mentoring, leadership, or ownership roles on projects/activities.
