About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician role at Bronson Methodist Hospital encompasses a professional career pathway with three distinct levels: Pharmacy Technician I, II, and III. Under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and adhering to established policies, procedures, and guidelines, the Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in various tasks. This includes filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing. Technicians are responsible for filling orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist and performing a variety of related technical, clerical, and supply duties. The specific duties may vary based on the work location (e.g., outpatient retail pharmacy, inpatient hospital pharmacy, infusion pharmacy) or shift assignment. Employees providing direct patient care are required to demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. Each level builds upon the skills and competencies of the preceding one, with Pharmacy Technician II requiring competencies of Tech I plus additional skills, and Pharmacy Technician III requiring competencies of Tech II plus further advanced duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Temporary or permanent Michigan Pharmacy Technician license required upon hire.
  • Permanent Michigan Pharmacy Tech licensure required within one year from issuance of temporary license.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification is required by the State of Michigan to transition from temporary to permanent licensure.
  • Skills in mathematics and basic algebra.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action in coordination with the pharmacists.
  • Effective communication skills to report and discuss findings, as needed with pharmacists, hospital personnel and external customers.
  • Ability to foster a positive, professional working relationship with coworkers.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Accuracy and initiative to complete routine and urgent tasks.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks within the constraints of stated objectives and to provide effective timely follow-up as needed.
  • Able to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Permanent Pharmacy Technician license in good standing with State of Michigan (for Tech II and III).
  • No current disciplinary action plans and the most recent performance evaluation score above 2.0 (for internal Tech II and III applicants).
  • Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of a Pharmacy Technician I (for Tech II).
  • Demonstrates ability to complete and maintain all competencies of Pharmacy Technician II (for Tech III).

Nice To Haves

  • 3-6 months of experience and/or training in hospital, retail pharmacy or elsewhere - OR - equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred (for Tech I).
  • If not previously trained, a 3-month formal training in pharmacy procedures is preferred (for Tech I).
  • Active professional organization involvement (for Tech III).
  • Mentoring, leadership, or ownership roles on projects/activities within the department or organization (for Tech III).

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in filling prescriptions and preparing IV admixtures by interpreting, transcribing, and preparing medication(s) for dispensing.
  • Fill orders with appropriate medications for review and approval by a Registered Pharmacist.
  • Perform a variety of related technical, clerical and supply duties.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served (for direct patient care).

  • Manage inventory (re-stocking, rotation of stock, expired medication removal) (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Perform prescription sales transactions through the point of sale system and cash register (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Fill prescriptions (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Answer and respond to phone calls (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Prioritize and process orders per instruction from the pharmacist (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and document as required (Outpatient/Retail - Tech I).
  • Manage inventory (re-stocking, rotation of stock, expired medication removal) (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Deliver supplies and medications to nursing units (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Operate the medication carousel (at selected locations) (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Package/repackage medications (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Assist in receiving medication deliveries (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Prepare non-sterile medication compounds (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Complete assigned inspections of medication storage locations (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Prioritize and process orders per instruction from the pharmacist (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and document as required (Hospital - Tech I).
  • Perform outpatient pharmacy purchasing of supplies and medications (Outpatient/Retail - Tech II).
  • Function in the role of OR Technician, ED Technician or Decentralized Pharmacy Technician (Outpatient/Retail - Tech II).
  • Assist the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories and clarifying/reconciling home medications (Hospital/Infusion - Tech II).
  • Provide patient medication education under the direction or supervision of the pharmacist, utilizing the teach back method (Hospital/Infusion - Tech II).
  • Perform sterile medication compounding, which may include parenteral nutrition preparation, following institution policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797> (Hospital/Infusion - Tech II).
  • Run and maintain any pharmacy robotic medication compounding equipment (Hospital/Infusion - Tech II).
  • Assist the pharmacist, with oversight, in reviewing and comprehending pharmacokinetic reports, collecting and entering patient height/weight into the department documentation system, and reviewing and comprehending patient lab reports or other unit specific information (Hospital/Infusion - Tech II).
  • Support the bedside medication delivery program (meds to beds), including assisting the pharmacist in obtaining patient home medication histories, clarifying/reconciling home medication, coordinating medication delivery to the patient, and interacting with other hospital personnel to coordinate medication therapy (Outpatient/Retail - Tech III).
  • Provide specialty pharmacy program support, including coordination of shipping, medication ordering, and inventory management of specialty prescriptions (Outpatient/Retail - Tech III).
  • Perform chemotherapy compounding following institutional policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with USP <797> and USP <800> (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Conduct advanced level home medication histories for admission reconciliation in the emergency department (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Perform advanced level pharmacy buying (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Perform advanced level automated dispensing cabinet configuration, maintenance, and optimization (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Conduct controlled substance diversion monitoring (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Perform advanced inventory management (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
  • Manage departmental scheduling for large departments (Hospital/Infusion - Tech III).
