About The Position

Reporting to the Pharmacy Tech Supervisor and the direct supervision by staff pharmacists, the Pharmacy Technician assists in the preparation and filling of all medications necessary for inpatient and outpatient services. Support all department initiatives and daily workflow by ensuring that the proper medication and tools are available for the clinical team and patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year experience as a pharmacy technician or certification preferred.
  • Applicants attending a pre-pharmacy or pharmacy school program without experience will be considered.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential is necessary to be considered a “Certified Pharmacy Technician.”
  • Strong knowledge of metric system conversions and calculation of ratio and proportions.
  • Passing score of 90% on calculation exam, aseptic preparation exam, safe handling of hazardous drugs and practicum.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of previous hospital pharmacy technician experience or 1 year of sterile compounding experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares drug orders from Physicians for review and dispensing by a Registered Pharmacist.
  • Replenishes all Pyxis machines.
  • Monitors and record refrigerator temperatures when filling, and documents corrective action taken if needed.
  • Informs Pharmacy Manager of any ongoing issues.
  • Counts, compounds and repackages pharmaceuticals using established procedures.
  • Medication dispensing and distribution to patient areas, Reorder and Restock of pharmacy inventory, restock inventory in department and nursing unit and restocks returns, evaluates stock for expired medications, Performs necessary monitoring and documentation.
  • Performs various billing/ crediting functions to ensure proper billing of all medications dispensed to patients to comply with hospital finance policies.
  • Ensures proper documentation of waste.
  • Picks up Physician orders from team centers on a regular basis, and additionally as required by the Pharmacist.
  • Performs light housekeeping duties such as arranging bins and stock neatly, removing items from bulk storage, dusting shelves, removing open boxes, keeping work areas neat and clean.
  • Replenishes specialty and code carts. All restocking of carts is documented through the use of a sign out sheet, noting time, date, and items replaced.
  • Uses aseptic techniques to prepare IVs and record IV refrigeration daily.
  • Transports IVs to the nursing floor.
  • Maintains competencies related to IV lab, Pyxis, McKesson Automation and CAPS.
  • Reviews and completes assigned inspections every other month and maintains all competencies required by the department and the hospital to ensure all jobs performed are done properly. All items are examined for expiration date, accurate storage, under proper conditions of light, refrigeration, heat and security.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
