About The Position

The Certified Perfusion Specialist supports the Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and Organ Perfusion Programs of Indiana Donor Network by providing expert technical and clinical management of perfusion systems used during and after organ donation and recovery. This position plays a vital role in ensuring organ viability and optimizing outcomes for transplantation by operating, monitoring, and maintaining perfusion-related parameters for Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and ex vivo organ perfusion, including kidney, liver, and lung (EVLP) systems. The Perfusionist collaborates closely with transplant surgeons, clinical coordinators, and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, effective, and compliant perfusion support consistent with CMS, UNOS, and FDA standards, while upholding the organization’s mission of saving and healing lives through organ and tissue donation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Science, Cardiovascular Technology, Biomedical Engineering, or related clinical field required or, A bachelor's degree with a certificate in Cardiovascular Perfusion.
  • Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) credential from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) is required.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of perfusion experience in cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, and/or extracorporeal circulation required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and/or ex vivo organ perfusion strongly preferred.
  • Continuing education in advanced perfusion science and ex vivo perfusion systems desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP) and Organ Perfusion Procedures
  • Sets up, operates, and monitors NRP circuits during donation after circulatory death (DCD) organ recovery.
  • Operates and manages ex vivo organ perfusion systems
  • Monitors physiological parameters, adjusting flows, pressures, and temperatures as needed to optimize organ viability.
  • Collaborates with transplant surgeons and clinical teams to ensure the safe restoration and maintenance of perfusion.
  • Ensures all perfusion procedures follow Indiana Donor Network protocols and comply with applicable regulations.
  • Documents perfusion data and events in real time to maintain accurate, complete procedural records.
  • Participates in donor case planning, equipment readiness, and intraoperative decision-making.
  • Monitors and evaluates organ function and perfusion metrics, providing clinical insight to recovery teams.
  • Supports surgeons, coordinators, and OPO staff during NRP and ex vivo organ perfusion procedures.
  • Contributes to donor management strategies aimed at improving organ utilization.
  • Ensures equipment’s readiness and technical excellence.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots all NRP and organ perfusion equipment to ensure operational reliability.
  • Performs safety checks, calibrations, and maintenance in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering and Supply Chain.
  • Ensures equipment and disposable supplies are available, prepared, and configured for all potential recovery scenarios.
  • Participates in technology evaluations and assists in the introduction of new perfusion systems and procedures.
