About The Position

This individual is responsible for performing an extensive number of data-collection functions, as delegated by the physician, to allow for proper, professional diagnosis of patients’ conditions.

Requirements

High school diploma
Three to six months related experience preferred
Valid proof of JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units or measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Acquaint all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: Visual Acuity, Lensometry, Applanation Tonometry, Confrontational Visual Field Testing, Stereo Testing, Evaluation of Motility, Pupillary Function Tests, Color Plates, Accurate Refractometry, Angle Assessment, Dilation of Pupils, Schirmers, Amsler Grid, Administer topical and oral medication under direct supervision of a physician, Humphrey Visual Field Testing.
Perform other testing and tasks specific to the physician’s clinic needs.
Educate all cataract evaluation patients regarding what a cataract is and how they are removed using eye model or photo as an educational tool. Be able to briefly describe mono-focal vs. multi-focal lenses.
Perform the duties of an ophthalmic scribe.
Learn coding and requirements for specific codes and modifiers.
Learn documentation requirements for E & M coding.
Be consistently accurate in coding patient’s visits.
Seek advice from more senior staff as necessary; never performing beyond capabilities.
Maintain stock levels and cleanliness of exam lanes.
Perform other duties, as required.
Demonstrate support of staff involvement in approved clinic activities.
Demonstrate supportive teamwork attitude.
Acknowledge co workers verbally and non-verbally.
Communicate and behave professionally at all times, demonstrate flexibility, using appropriate communication techniques, verbally validates other perspectives.
Assume responsibility for continuous learning by attending in-services, staff meetings and updates.
Complete assigned Continuing Education Training.
Maintain OSHA and HIPAA compliance.
Remains current on credit hours and JCAHPO certification.
Determines which patient should be taken next from the waiting room to have testing initiated.
Escorts patients from the waiting room for the data collection.
Following testing, advises as to who will see them next and makes them comfortable during the wait.
Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
Escorts patients from the clinical area to the check-out station or optical dispensary, when necessary.
Addresses all clinic callbacks by the end of the session in which they were received; insuring proper chart documentation.
Under direction of physician, may call pharmacy with either new or prescription refills which will be properly recorded in patient’s chart.
Assists in screenings and health fairs as needed.
