The occupational therapist assistant assists the occupational therapist in carrying out a patient’s established plan of care. The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) is accountable for the application of a written treatment plan and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals. They utilize a variety of modalities as appropriate to enhance patient progress. They instruct patients in varying programs appropriate to enhance performance and cultivate progress toward occupational therapy goals. The COTA communicates with and educates patients and their families regarding plan of care, home equipment recommendations, considerations for additional rehab, discharge planning, home exercise program, self-administered treatments, and family assistance.
