About The Position

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) performs patient treatments as indicated by the treatment plan, documents treatments given with frequent and objective measurements, and works with adult patients with clinical competency. The role requires completing established competencies for the position within the designated introductory period and performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in occupational therapy assistant program.
  • Active U.S. military service members or veterans with any military service, training or education verified and credited by an accredited COTA program is acceptable.
  • No previous work experience needed.
  • Possession of current Texas State license.
  • BLS-Obtained through approved American Heart Association Training Center or the Military Training Network.

  • Previous COTA experience in inpatient/outpatient setting

Responsibilities

  • Performs selected tests and measurements in consultation with the therapist.
  • Interprets the evaluation for frequently referred diagnosis, asking questions when necessary and seeking guidance concerning more complex situations.
  • Reviews patient chart and progress prior to treatment and modifies the treatment accordingly within parameters of the treatment plan.
  • Instructs and involves patient, family, and nursing staff in patient’s progress and discharge plans making appropriate discharge recommendations to the therapist and attends appropriate meetings.
  • Uses appropriate modalities and procedures demonstrating understanding of the therapist’s selection and asking for clarification as necessary.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, demonstrating knowledge of principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
  • Maintains documentation on all treatments.
  • Assures appropriate equipment performance prior to each use.
  • Provides in-service to staff.
  • Organizes schedule to reflect patient priorities and needs of other staff.
  • Delegates responsibility to supportive personnel.
  • Provides clinical education for COTA students.
  • Informs supervisor of incidents, accidents, equipment failure or unusual physician or patient problems immediately.
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintains safe environment.
  • Addresses patient population-specific needs.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
