About The Position

The Behavioral Health Nursing Attendant provides direct patient care and support to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use disorders. Working under the supervision of a registered nurse or clinical team, this role ensures patient safety, assists with daily activities, and helps maintain a therapeutic and structured environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions and patient safety practices
  • Empathy, patience, and strong observational skills
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a multidisciplinary team

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Behavioral Health Technician (preferred, not always required)
  • Prior experience in behavioral health, psychiatric care, or healthcare setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous observation and ensure the safety of patients in a behavioral health setting
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene, meals, and mobility
  • Support and monitor patients during group activities, therapy sessions, and recreational programs
  • Observe, document, and report patient behaviors, mood changes, and safety concerns to nursing staff
  • Implement de-escalation techniques and assist in crisis intervention as needed
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment in accordance with facility policies
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers
  • Follow all safety protocols, including suicide and elopement precautions
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support individualized care plans
