About The Position

The Nursing Assistant (NA) will provide direct patient care and support licensed nursing staff in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care to Veterans receiving services at the Sheridan VA Health Care System. The Nursing Assistant performs duties under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies, facility procedures, and accepted nursing practices. The Nursing Assistant will provide 24/7 nursing care, including weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must process a High School Certificate of Graduation or GED.
  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant.
  • Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • A minimum of one (6) months of direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years.
  • Have knowledge of routine office-related duties, including working knowledge of computers and word processing programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, feeding, oral hygiene, and mobility assistance.
  • Measure, record, and report patient vital signs, height, weight, intake and output, pain observations, and other clinical data in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Observe and promptly report changes in a patient's physical, emotional, mental, or behavioral condition to the Registered Nurse or appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Assist with patient transfers, ambulation, positioning, and transportation using proper body mechanics and safe patient handling equipment.
  • Provide one-to-one observation and support for patients as assigned, ensuring patient safety and compliance with care plans.
  • Collect routine specimens (e.g., urine, stool, sputum) according to established procedures and transport specimens appropriately.
  • Maintain patient care environments that are clean, safe, and orderly while adhering to infection prevention and control standards.
  • Assist nursing staff with admission, transfer, discharge, and post-procedure activities as directed.
  • Reinforce patient education provided by licensed healthcare professionals and encourage patient participation in care activities.
  • Support restorative and rehabilitative care programs by assisting patients in maintaining or improving functional abilities.
  • Utilize approved computerized systems and electronic health records to document care and access patient information as authorized.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and safeguard protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA, VA regulations, and facility policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and participate in emergency preparedness activities, drills, and response actions as required.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are available in patient care areas and notify appropriate personnel when replenishment is required.
  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, and occupational health requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives, mandatory training, competency assessments, and continuing education activities.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with Veterans, family members, visitors, and members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Provide compassionate, respectful, and culturally sensitive care that supports the VA mission of serving Veterans.
