The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), also known as a State Registered Nurse Assistant (SRNA), provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or other licensed care team member. The role emphasizes providing excellent patient care while respecting human dignity and the uniqueness of each individual. Key attributes for this role include empathy, compassion, communication, and teamwork, which are essential for the PCT-nurse-patient relationship. The position involves assisting patients with personal hygiene, including bathing, dental and oral care, hair, and nail care, as well as assisting with bowel and bladder functions while maintaining patient dignity. Responsibilities also include recording patient intake and output (I&O), collecting and transporting specimens for laboratory analysis, changing and transporting soiled linens, and maintaining a clean and tidy patient environment. Additionally, the CNA assists patients with activity, turning, and repositioning as ordered and in collaboration with the nurse, and communicates pertinent patient information and findings to the nurse. The role requires the ability to set priorities for the care of multiple patients.
