About The Position

This is a paid 10-week Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Employee Residency Program in partnership with the Delaware Skills Center, Dawn Career Institute, and Christiana Care Health System. The program integrates classroom and clinical components. Upon successful completion of the 6-week Certified Nursing Assistant Course, participants will take the Delaware State Test for Nurse Aide Certification. Following this, they will transition to Christiana Care for approximately 4 weeks of clinical training. The first 6 weeks involve instructor-led didactic and clinical training at either the Delaware Skills Center in New Castle, DE, or Dawn Career Institute in Newark, DE. The subsequent 4 weeks consist of preceptor-led clinical training in an acute care inpatient setting at Christiana Care's campuses in Newark or Wilmington. The starting rate of pay during the training is $16.50 hourly, with healthcare benefits provided during training and fully paid tuition. This program is specifically designed for individuals who desire to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and have no prior nursing assistant course completion or patient care experience. The program requires full-time attendance for 6 weeks, Monday through Friday, between 6:30 am and 4:00 pm. Upon completion, participants will be assigned to a ChristianaCare unit for one year or 1800 hours per agreement. Post-residency roles will be at Newark, DE, or Wilmington, DE campuses, offering full-time/flex (36 hours weekly/72 hours bi-weekly) or part-time (24 hours bi-weekly) positions, including every other weekend and rotating holidays. Available shifts include Day/Eve, Evening/Midnight, Day/Midnight, and Straight Eve shifts with 8 and 12-hour rotations.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • BCLS Certification required, or Acceptance into a Christiana Care approved Patient Care Technician training program
  • Must not have completed a nursing assistant course.
  • Must not have any patient care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supports activities of daily living under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Performs and accurately records vital signs, Accu-checks, bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and mobilizing patients.
  • Supports the organization's patient safety goals and initiatives.
  • Performs assigned nursing duties for the comfort and well-being of patients.
  • Responds to patient crisis situations and initiates interventions within the scope of responsibilities and notifies RN.
  • Performs successful finger sticks on patients, following all standard laboratory safety policies.
  • Performs defined procedures on point of care instrumentation.
  • Provides 1:1 observation for 1-2 patient(s) experiencing a psychiatric crisis, suicidal/homicidal ideation under the order of a physician in Powerchart.
  • Provides 1:1 observation for 1-2 patient(s) at risk for safety based on nursing assessment and order in Powerchart.
  • Responds with promptness, empathy and interest to the needs of patients.
  • Communicates to patients, employees, and physicians utilizing courteous verbal and written communication skills.
  • Completes mandatory in-service education.
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
