About The Position

Alexandria Health Department is seeking a compassionate family nurse practitioner, motivated to make a difference in the lives of both individuals and communities, to join our team. This PRN (as-needed), wage position, is primarily responsible for providing clinician coverage for Alexandria Health Department's population health clinical services, including Sexual and Reproductive Health, Teen Wellness, and Newcomer Health. Performs patient care as a nurse practitioner with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, and develop and implement care plans including the administration of medication and case management. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code. Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is one of 35 health districts in Virginia. Requirements

• Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology.
• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients.
• Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation.
• Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs.
• CPR/BLS certification
• Licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.

Nice To Haves

• Prior public health or community health with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics and family practice preferred

Benefits

• Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore, they are not eligible for benefits which are provided to salaried employees, such as leave credits, holiday pay, insurance, access to the grievance procedure, etc.
