About The Position

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 140 clinical providers, providing care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and eight offsite locations. They handle over 68,000 outpatient visits, 28,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, and 3,300 surgeries annually. Teaching, research, and high-quality clinical care are top priorities, with highly ranked residency and fellowship programs. The department also has a significant research enterprise, including population health studies, wet laboratory research on tumor biology, fibroid research, and hypertensive diseases in pregnancy, and a unique research center (CI3) focusing on reproductive policy and innovations in sexual and reproductive health. The department was ranked #16 on the 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report. The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) role involves using best practices and patient knowledge to exercise autonomous decision-making in assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation, and research. The University of Chicago midwifery team is expanding and seeking a 7th full-time midwife to extend service coverage to include weekends. The team is dedicated to supporting low-risk pregnancies and births and is looking for midwives with vision, a voice, and a commitment to exceptional care.

Requirements

  • College or university degree from an accredited school/college.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration.
  • Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
  • Graduate of a midwifery educational program approved by the American College of Nurse Midwives.
  • Current IL RN/APN and CNM license.
  • Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certificates.
  • Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of full-scope CNM experience.
  • Experience with advanced knowledge of prenatal case, outpatient clinics, labor and delivery, postpartum care and obstetrical ultrasound.
  • 3+ years’ experience as an RN/APN or CNM in higher acuity Labor & Delivery settings.

Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum, and newborn patients.
  • Perform physical exams, collect and document data, manage labor and spontaneous delivery, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribe appropriate interventions and medications.
  • Provide oversight of many quality and safety projects on Labor and Delivery.
  • Be responsible for all phases of assigned projects including assigning individual responsibilities, coordinating activities of project team, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely completion of project.
  • Conduct project meetings and be responsible for project tracking and analysis.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and review project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
  • Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care.
  • Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development.
  • Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit.
  • May participate in health education in the community; may participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician; may prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions; acts as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.
  • Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Design patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Evaluate goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
  • Have a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.
  • Develop and coordinate APP training and professional development activities.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
