About The Position

Certified Medication Aides (CMAs) are Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) who are responsible for providing basic care to residents to maintain or regain physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This includes dispensing medications per State standards and practice guidelines. CMAs are certified through successful completion of training in a State-approved training course and a State-approved medication aide training program. They work in collaboration with registered nurses and are expected to perform basic CNA duties as needed. The primary purpose of this role is to dispense resident medications as ordered by the physician, following standard practices for medication administration. Responsibilities are delegated by the administrative authority of the neighborhood charge nurse and/or Director of Nursing, and accountability is consistent with the scope of practice outlined in the Nurse Practice Act of the State of State Board of Nursing and Health Occupations Credentialing Division of the State Department of Health. The Certified Medication Aide is under the direct supervision of the neighborhood Primary Care Nurse and the facility Director of Nursing and/or the Assistant Director of Nursing.

Requirements

  • Current, unencumbered, active certification to practice as a Certified Nurse Aide in this state.
  • Current, unencumbered, active certification to practice as a Certified Medication Aide in this state.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with residents, family members, visitors, co-workers, other facility personnel, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Knowledge and understanding of dementia and dementia care.
  • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
  • Willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
  • Patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing assistant practices.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Dispense resident medications as ordered by a physician licensed to practice in this state, following the 5-rights of medication administration (Right resident, Right medication, Right dose, Right route, Right time).
  • Track all prescription and non-prescription drugs to be administered, keeping complete and accurate records of dosage, time, and amounts.
  • Ensure residents take ordered, administered medications.
  • Follow all facility standards and regulations to ensure the safety of residents and staff.
  • Supervise and observe residents as medications and cares are provided.
  • Take and document vital signs.
  • Follow safe handling procedures related to storage of medications and biologicals, including appropriate refrigerated medications and ensuring narcotics and other scheduled medications are in safe storage to prevent drug diversion or resident accessibility.
  • Assist licensed and certified nursing staff in appropriate duties.
  • Provide quality direct care to residents based on evidence-based best practice per each resident’s comprehensive care plan.
  • Report to and perform duties assigned by the neighborhood charge nurse.
  • Demonstrate acceptable skill proficiency in those areas of certified nurse assistant that the facility has determined it will make available to its residents.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in motivating residents to participate in and complete planned care.
  • Follow appropriate safety and hygiene measures at all times to protect residents and themselves.
  • Meet facility continuing education requirements for certified nurse assistants.
  • Demonstrate a practical knowledge of facility policies and procedures for nursing.
  • Comply with facility guidelines for documentation and physicians’ orders.
  • Relate well to residents, family members, and facility staff.
  • Interact well with the interdisciplinary team and implement individual programs as developed.
  • Follow all Infection Prevention and Control procedures.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies for treatment.
  • Maintain a consistent resident care schedule and be efficient in the use of time.
  • Perform duties with a minimum of supervision.
  • Identify potential problems/issues and report to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance.
  • Be supportive of facility goals and objectives.
