Certified Medication Aide
About The Position
The Certified Medication Aide will prepare, administer, and document prescribed medications per protocol. Essential Functions include administering prescribed medications and treatments as defined by state regulations in accordance with company policy and procedure. The role involves observing and reporting reactions and side-effects to medication to the facility's charge nurse, taking and recording vital signs prior to medication administration, and documenting reasons prescribed drugs are not administered. The medication aide will document administered medications in the resident's medication administration record and administer oxygen per nasal cannula or a non-sealing face mask only in an emergency, followed by immediate notification of a licensed nurse and documentation. The position also includes applying specifically ordered ophthalmic, otic, nasal, and vaginal medication, accurately following all principles of good medication administration, and assisting with customary daily requirements and tasks in care and treatment such as bathing, feeding, dressing, observing intake of food, care of hair, nails, moving residents, and responding to calls, which includes lifting and transferring. The aide will also help charge nurses with the cleanliness of the nursing station, medication room, and supply room.
Requirements
- Successful completion of State Approved Medication Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program.
- Good standing in the state registry is required.
- Must demonstrate working knowledge of Universal Precautions and the Blood Borne Pathogen rules.
Nice To Haves
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- One (1) year of previous health care experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Prepares, administers, and documents prescribed medications per protocol.
- Administers prescribed medications and treatments as defined by state regulations in accordance with company policy and procedure.
- Observes and reports reactions and side-effects to medication to the facility's charge nurse.
- Takes and records vital signs prior to the administration of medication which could affect or change the vital signs.
- Reports to charge nurse and documents reasons prescribed drugs are not administered.
- Administers regularly prescribed medication which the permit holder has been trained to administer only after personally preparing (setting up) the medication to be administered.
- Documents the administered medication in the resident's medication administration record.
- Administers oxygen per nasal cannula or a non-sealing face mask only in an emergency; immediately after the emergency, the medication aide shall verbally notify the licensed nurse on duty or on call and appropriately document the action and notification.
- Applies specifically ordered ophthalmic, otic, nasal, and vaginal medication.
- Accurately follows all principles of good medication administration.
- Assists in customary daily requirements and tasks in care and treatment such as bathing, feeding, dressing, observing intake of food, care of hair, nails, moving residents from area to area, responding to calls, etc., which includes lifting and transferring.
- Helps charge nurses with the cleanliness of the nursing station, medication room and supply room.
