About The Position

Under limited supervision, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) checks and monitors client vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, documenting readings as appropriate. The CMA prepares and administers medication, observes medical reactions, and reports any concerns to nursing staff. This role also provides assistance to physicians and clinical staff.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited program or school.
  • Current certificate as a Certified Medical Assistant, as required by board or commission in the State of Texas
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Working knowledge of theories, principles, and basic nursing concepts in order to effectively contribute to client's medical care
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Conflict resolution skills to implement solutions and resolve conflict
  • Must be a critical thinker to assess situations and develop and executes action plans
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow written instructions
  • Ability to collaborate with others
  • Ability to work irregular hours, over weekends, and holidays
  • Normal or corrected vision and some color vision, necessary to read thermometers, blood pressure gauges, dipstick analysis results, and so forth to see and evaluate presented symptoms and injuries
  • Abilities to respond to telephone and, pages, and intercoms
  • Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate instruments and syringes, apply bandages or sterile wipes, and accept and pass instruments and specimens; and touch sensitivity necessary to detect pulse, palpate body areas, and perform treatments with minimal client discomfort
  • Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data on a regular basis
  • Ability to stoop and bend, ability to reach and grab with arms and hands, and ability to walk and move about for up to two hours at a time
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and administers medication as prescribed by a physician and documents in the medication administration record.
  • Supports patient care by checking and monitoring client vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressure, and sugar levels; records client's readings and other information pertinent to the client's medical needs and care.
  • Observes client's physical, mental, emotional conditions and reports any changes or concerns to nursing staff.
  • Collects client sick call requests and performs data entry into the system.
  • Schedules client's appointments and coordinates client schedule transportation to scheduled appointments.
  • Performs other duties as they might be assigned, including storing supplies, changing biohazard bags, answering telephones, photocopying, scanning and filing documents and forms.
