About The Position

South Shore Medical Center is expanding its practices and seeking dedicated individuals for full and part-time opportunities across various locations and specialties including OB-GYN, Cardiology, Family Med, Primary Care, and Pediatrics. The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting practice efficiency and patient flow. Clinical duties encompass maintaining universal precautions, rooming patients, taking vital signs, performing phlebotomy and administering vaccines, as well as executing treatments and procedures ordered by providers. The role also involves patient education, counseling, and performing various tests and screenings. Maintaining patient rooms, stocking supplies, and ordering supplies are also key responsibilities. Administrative duties include appointment scheduling, filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, managing patient charts, and obtaining referrals.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support required.
  • CMA - Certified Medical Assistant certificate preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Strong clinical and judgment skills are essential.
  • Good organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work successfully as a team player.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of varied medical procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology and English grammar.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written instructions; communicate clearly.
  • Able to both lead and take direction from Nursing Supervisor.
  • Employee must demonstrate computer proficiency through efficient use of the electronic medical record; telephone communications; e-mail; and other computer software as required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) (Including courses offered through SSH)

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Greets patients in a professional manner and escorts them into patient exam rooms.
  • Assists with varied procedures, including routine and complex procedures, under the supervision of a physician, NP, or PA.
  • Provides a variety of services, including assisting physicians in minor procedures and wound care.
  • Acts as a chaperone when needed.
  • Takes vital signs and documents them accordingly.
  • Assists the administrative team with greeting patients, scheduling appointments, processing orders, collecting encounter forms, and answering telephones.
  • Determines the reason for patient visits or phone calls, flags for immediate responses, takes messages, and notifies appropriate medical staff.
  • Responsible for the coordination of room rotations.
  • Assists with receiving test results for physicians and calling patients with follow-up instructions for labs and tests.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains sterilizer competencies.
  • Ensures excellent customer service and fosters an environment of optimal patient care.
  • Communicates critical patient information to the nurse and/or provider.
  • Acts in a professional manner at all times.
  • Maintains a positive attitude, creating a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
  • Ensures appropriate communication of schedule changes with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, staff, and patients.
  • Verifies the schedule at the end of the clinic and provides it to the Program Director.
  • Assists the Nursing Supervisor with completing weekly MA schedules.
  • Participates in daily huddles, attends 75% of scheduled staff meetings, and attends workflow/other meetings as needed.
  • Cross-trains to assist in covering the front desk team when needed, including patient check-in/out, answering patient questions, and other related administrative tasks.
  • Efficiently manages email communications in a timely manner.
  • Is proficient in the use of all computer applications, including Meditech, Lotus Notes, and i-Heal.
  • Assists in uploading photographs into Meditech and i-Heal.
  • Percepts new employees using the established check-off sheet, reviewing departmental protocols, policies, and workflow.
  • Serves as a role model/mentor, providing support, training, and sharing knowledge, including explaining and monitoring new workflows and policies.
  • Works in collaboration with the Nursing Supervisor in the preparation of yearly evaluations by providing individual feedback and assisting with chart review and reviewing yearly competencies.
  • Ensures compliance with all personnel policies.
  • Commits to two sessions of annual flu clinics.
  • Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
  • Demonstrates required office and clinical equipment competencies.
  • Verifies patient identification according to policy prior to administration of care and/or procedures.
  • Complies with current CDC hand hygiene guidelines.
  • Adheres to universal precautions and makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Appropriately disposes of hazardous materials.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when performing all aspects of the job.
  • Follows appropriate chain of communication/command.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Works the required weekend and holiday schedule.
