About The Position

The ED CMA/MA performs routine patient care support duties in the Emergency Department to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients to expedite throughput and patient care. This role functions within the ED under the direction of the ED Physician and/or ED APP and the ED resource nurse. The CMA/MA is responsible for maintaining equipment, supplies, and providing patient care under the direct supervision of the medical and nursing staff.

Requirements

  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AAH) – American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AMT) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (ARMA) within 6 months – American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • High School Diploma/GED

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant clinical or medical assistant experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients by collecting chief complaint information, vital signs, and medication reconciliation
  • Providing patient education and written instructions using approved pamphlets, brochures, or handouts as directed by the RN or provider
  • Calling in non-narcotic prescriptions and prescription substitutions to pharmacies per provider direction
  • Accepting telephone, verbal, or written orders in accordance with Order Mode/Entry policies and provider authentication requirements
  • Completing forms such as FMLA, DOT, IPPE, AWV, and other patient documentation
  • Performing venipuncture for specimen collection
  • Processing CLIA-waived laboratory testing per service-line protocols
  • Providing simple wound care under RN or provider assessment and supervision
  • Administering saline solutions for simple wound irrigation
  • Serving as procedural consent witness and completing procedure time-out forms
  • Cleaning and maintaining instruments and equipment
  • Obtaining fetal heart tones
  • Applying slings and splints under provider direction and supervision
  • Suturing wounds in non-cosmetic areas under provider direction and supervision
  • Removing sutures from well-healed wounds under provider supervision
  • Administering medications per provider order
  • Retrieving and distributing condition-specific educational materials per provider direction
  • Assisting emergency department providers with direct patient care within scope of practice
  • Facilitating patient throughput, including rooming, transfers, and discharge assistance
  • Obtaining vital signs and collecting patient intake data for provider visits
  • Assisting providers during procedures
  • Performing EKGs, ear irrigations, vision screenings, dressing changes, wound care, splint application, point-of-care testing, medication administration, fetal heart tone checks, and specimen collection
  • Cleaning equipment and assisting with staff training and onboarding
