About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.

  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) — National Association for Health Professionals
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) — National Healthcareer Association
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – ARMA — American Registry of Medical Assistants
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AAH — American Allied Health
  • Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) — National Center for Competency Testing
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — American Association of Medical Assistants
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) — American Heart Association (required within 30 days)
  • H.S. Diploma/GED — Required education
  • Work experience — As applicable to role

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients — Collect chief complaint, family/social/surgical history, and complete medication reconciliation.
  • Telephone interactions — Communicate with patients, families, pharmacies, and facilities; gather and document information per policy.
  • Administrative tasks — Check‑in/out, prior authorizations, scheduling, benefits verification, referrals, and test coordination.
  • Office procedures — Perform tasks per competency, including catheterizations, bladder scans, suture/staple removal, cast application/removal, TB test reads, and point‑of‑care diagnostics.
  • Patient instructions — Provide written procedure, medication, and follow‑up instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Patient education — Retrieve and provide condition‑specific education from approved sources per provider direction.
  • Medication administration — Administer medications per provider order.
  • Prescription support — Assist with refills, call medications into pharmacies, notify patients, and document in EMR.
  • Competency maintenance — Maintain skills in point‑of‑care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
  • MA essential functions — Perform all core medical assistant duties.
  • Procedure billing — Responsible for billing related to procedures.
  • Specialty medication authorization — Obtain prior authorizations for specialty medications.
  • Medication refills — Refill medications per department protocol.
  • Normal result communication — Contact patients with normal test results.
