Requirements

  • Certificate from accredited School of Radiologic Technology
  • New York State license or temporary permit to practice Diagnostic Radiology
  • Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRRT)
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and radiology information systems (HIS/RIS) and HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains supplies and cleanliness of the workspace, restocking as needed and notifying supervisors of shortages.
  • Assists the section with special projects, reports, and activities.
  • Maintains cooperative and professional relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, and staff.
  • Demonstrates skill in equipment set-up, utilization, and maintenance, performing quality control checks and reporting malfunctions.
  • Recognizes and responds to medical emergencies, notifying appropriate personnel immediately.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of radiation safety procedures, including shielding, beam restriction, and preventing accidental exposures.
  • Maintains and returns radiation detection badges and rings as required.
  • Performs transmission to PACS, generates hard copies when necessary, and completes examinations efficiently.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the radiographic area and prepares equipment and supplies in advance.
  • Adjusts work schedule for STAT and emergency cases and alters work patterns to meet patient and staff needs.
  • Follows special instructions on radiographic requisitions.
  • Independently implements patient procedures according to departmental protocols, explaining procedures to patients, answering questions, and ensuring patient comfort and privacy.
  • Positions patients and equipment appropriately, uses lead markers, and ensures high-quality radiographs.
  • Uses positioning and immobilizing devices and considers various protocols for radiographic positioning and technique.
  • Identifies correct patients using two identifiers (full name and birth date) and verifies requisitions.
  • Introduces self to patients, reviews requisitions, and confers with medical staff for clarification when necessary.
  • Seeks assistance from supervisors for difficult or questionable results.
  • Consults policy and procedure manuals as necessary.
  • Recognizes and follows isolation precautions.
  • Effectively assesses patient information and status, following appropriate procedures.
  • Competent in scheduling and modifying exams in RIS and accessing patient data in HIS.
  • Knowledgeable of the RIS patient tracking cycle and documents begin, complete, and departure times.
  • Has working knowledge of film library functions.
  • Demonstrates ability to access patient information and maintains confidentiality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
