About The Position

The Lactation Counselor is responsible for providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. Duties include daily bedside lactation rounds; consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems; daily maintenance of lactation phone calls; in-service education for maternity/NICU/Family Care nursing staff, and documentation and communication of plan to patients, families, staff and physicians.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) | American Heart Association (AHA) | Within 90 days of Start Date | Learning Management System

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English to ensure effective communication in the workplace and with patients, families, and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents daily bedside lactation rounds.
  • Using the history obtained from the patient, develops, implements, and evaluates the breastfeeding plan of care, modifying the plan as needed.
  • Communicates the plan to nursing and medical providers, arranging follow-up care and referrals as needed.
  • Returns phone calls made to the lactation line and performs call-backs daily, providing support, guidance, and referrals to other health care providers as needed.
  • Documents discussions in the patients EMR.
  • Provides in-service education related to breastfeeding to OB/NICU/Family Care staff, (i.e. Validation Day, weekly newsletter, one-on-one new hire education).
  • Maintains and expands own knowledge by participating in continuing education.
  • Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
