About The Position

ProSidian is seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) / Safety Professional - Construction/Industrial Hygiene to join their Engagement Team. This role will primarily support Environmental Management Sector requirements for a liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. The position involves providing on-site occupational health and construction safety support, focusing on anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, documenting, and controlling workplace health hazards. The professional will also conduct field inspections, hazard analysis reviews, pre-job planning, worker observations, and compliance support. Activities requiring independent CIH or CSP professional judgment will be performed by, or under the direction of, an appropriately credentialed professional.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing industrial-hygiene field monitoring, exposure assessment, instrument calibration, data collection, recordkeeping, and control verification.
  • Working knowledge of applicable provisions of 29 CFR Parts 1910 and 1926, 10 CFR Part 851, DOE requirements, Savannah River Site procedures, and recognized industrial-hygiene practices.
  • Knowledge of chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic hazards encountered in construction and industrial environments.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, Safety Data Sheets, work packages, procedures, permits, sampling data, laboratory reports, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience reviewing JHAs, AHAs, pre-task plans, permits, and work packages for occupational-health and safety hazards.
  • Ability to work independently in active field environments while coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong technical-writing, communication, training, coaching, facilitation, and conflict-resolution capabilities.
  • Ability to maintain required training, medical qualifications, respiratory-protection eligibility, site-access credentials, and other project qualifications throughout the assignment.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to satisfy applicable DOE, SRS, SRNS, client, and ProSidian screening, badging, drug-testing, fitness-for-duty, and site-access requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license. Any personal vehicle used for project business must have valid registration and legally required insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, environmental health, engineering, chemistry, biology, physics, public health, or a closely related scientific or technical discipline is preferred.
  • An associate degree, relevant technical credential, or equivalent combination of education, specialized training, and directly applicable experience may be considered when permitted by the governing task order.
  • Professional experience supporting industrial hygiene and construction-safety activities in commercial, industrial, nuclear, power, chemical, defense, federal, laboratory, or other high-hazard environments is required.
  • Active CIH certification issued by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing is required only when the individual will independently perform or approve work reserved for a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with demolition, facility modification, concrete work, mechanical or electrical installation, ventilation systems, protective coatings, specialty applications, process systems, equipment installation, maintenance, testing, and commissioning is preferred.
  • Previous DOE, NNSA, Savannah River Site, nuclear-facility, NQA-1, or other high-hazard federal-project experience is strongly preferred.
  • Current OSHA 30-Hour Construction training is preferred and may be required before deployment.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED, HAZWOPER, respiratory-protection, confined-space, asbestos, lead, silica, hearing-conservation, heat-stress, fall-protection, or other applicable qualifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for assigned facilities, work packages, processes, materials, and field conditions.
  • Assist with developing exposure-monitoring strategies based on work scope, potential hazards, exposure routes, historical data, similar-exposure groups, and possible acute or chronic health effects.
  • Conduct personal, area, task-based, and direct-reading monitoring using approved methods and calibrated equipment.
  • Monitor potential exposures to airborne contaminants, respirable crystalline silica, asbestos, lead, metals, welding fumes, particulates, nuisance dust, volatile organic compounds, solvents, coatings, adhesives, chemicals, noise, vibration, heat and cold stress, illumination, biological agents, and ergonomic stressors.
  • Prepare, calibrate, operate, inspect, maintain, and store industrial-hygiene instruments and sampling equipment.
  • Maintain accurate field notes, calibration logs, sampling records, chain-of-custody forms, laboratory reports, exposure notifications, and data-quality documentation.
  • Coordinate the submission of samples to approved analytical laboratories and track results through receipt and evaluation.
  • Assist the supervising CIH with interpreting monitoring results against applicable OSHA exposure limits and authorized NIOSH, ACGIH, DOE, and project-specific occupational-exposure criteria.
  • Promptly report suspected overexposures, unusual monitoring results, worker symptoms, complaints, control failures, or changing exposure conditions.
  • Communicate approved monitoring findings and protective requirements to workers, supervisors, project management, occupational medicine, and site industrial-hygiene personnel.
  • Recommend and help validate controls using the hierarchy of controls, emphasizing elimination, substitution, isolation, containment, engineering controls, local exhaust ventilation, and improved work practices before reliance on PPE.
  • Evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of respiratory-protection, ventilation, hearing-conservation, heat-stress, chemical-management, hazardous-material, and ergonomic controls.
  • Support respirator selection, medical-evaluation coordination, fit-testing, cartridge-change determinations, equipment inspections, and respiratory-protection documentation.
  • Review Safety Data Sheets, chemical inventories, work packages, procedures, permits, Job Hazard Analyses, Activity Hazard Analyses, and pre-task plans for occupational-health hazards and required controls.
  • Assist with reviewing new or modified activities involving hazardous materials, carcinogens, highly toxic substances, process gases, coatings, adhesives, sealants, solvents, and other chemicals before their introduction into the workplace.
  • Support investigations of suspected occupational illnesses, employee exposure concerns, monitoring anomalies, and failed industrial-hygiene controls.
  • Prepare or deliver approved hazard-specific training and technical briefings for supervisors, craft personnel, employees, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with qualified radiological-control personnel when activities interface with radiological areas or requirements.
  • Maintain a visible field presence and support safe execution of authorized construction, installation, maintenance, demolition, coating, lining, rubber, fusion, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Support implementation of the applicable Safety Management System, Worker Protection Plan, Integrated Safety Management requirements, site procedures, and project-specific safety plans.
  • Participate in daily coordination meetings, plan-of-the-day meetings, pre-job briefings, safety meetings, constructability reviews, work-package planning, readiness reviews, walkdowns, and commissioning activities.
  • Review JHAs, AHAs, work packages, permits, procedures, and pre-task plans for completeness, changing conditions, industrial-hygiene concerns, and appropriate protective measures.
  • Verify that identified occupational-health and safety hazards are controlled before work begins and that controls remain effective during execution.
  • Conduct and document field inspections, worker observations, housekeeping assessments, and compliance reviews.
  • Identify unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, uncontrolled exposures, and noncompliant practices; communicate findings and track corrective actions through closure.
  • Exercise stop-work responsibility and immediately elevate imminent-danger conditions, suspected overexposures, uncontrolled hazards, or serious noncompliance in accordance with project procedures and delegated authority.
  • Support fact-finding, incident investigations, causal analyses, corrective-action development, lessons learned, and verification of corrective-action effectiveness.
  • Assist with evaluating high-hazard activities involving confined spaces, hazardous energy, hot work, electrical work, elevated work, excavation, cranes, rigging, lifting, mobile equipment, pressure testing, and emergency-response considerations.
  • Coordinate occupational-health and safety requirements with project management, field supervision, craft personnel, subcontractors, quality, engineering, environmental, occupational medicine, emergency management, and radiological-control organizations.
  • Protect controlled, proprietary, personal, and project-sensitive information and maintain records in accordance with applicable document-control, records-management, and quality requirements.
