About The Position

Custer County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for certified, full-time Deputy Sheriffs. The role is ideal for dedicated law enforcement professionals who value community service, teamwork, and proactive policing in one of the most scenic areas of South Dakota. Custer County spans over 1,500 square miles and borders several South Dakota counties. It is home to landmarks such as the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, the Black Hills National Forest, and Buffalo Gap National Grassland. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office also provides contract patrols for the United States Forest Service.

Requirements

• Current South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission Certification
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving history
• Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation
• No prior felony or simple assault, domestic violence convictions
• Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays

Responsibilities

• Enforcing local and state laws
• Preventing and suppressing crime and accidents
• Serving legal processes
• Promoting public safety through community policing
• Performing other duties as assigned
• Providing contract patrols for the United States Forest Service

• Starting wage of up to $27.59 per hour for certified officers
• $1.00 per hour shift differential for hours worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM
