About The Position

The Certified Allison Transmission Technician is a highly skilled commercial-vehicle technician responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, rebuilding, and maintaining Allison automatic transmissions and related drivetrain systems for fleet and vocational customers. This position supports the Ford Pro Elite Commercial Service Center commitment to commercial-vehicle uptime, rapid and accurate repair, first-time quality, and an exceptional fleet-customer experience. The technician performs advanced mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic diagnostics on applicable Ford commercial vehicles and customer fleet units equipped with Allison transmissions. The role requires current Allison certification, strong heavy-duty diagnostic capability, thorough repair-order documentation, and the ability to work effectively in a high-volume commercial truck environment. Ford Pro Elite Commercial Service Centers are designed around commercial-fleet needs, including specialized technicians, larger commercial bays, extended service availability, and rapid turnaround; this role directly supports those uptime expectations.

Requirements

  • Current Allison Transmission technician certification, or Allison certification at a level approved by dealership management.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor-vehicle record.
  • Minimum of three years of automotive, commercial-truck, diesel, fleet, or transmission-repair experience; equivalent manufacturer training and demonstrated expertise may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing automatic transmissions, drivetrain systems, hydraulic systems, and electronically controlled vehicle systems.
  • Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment, OEM scan tools, electrical test equipment, wiring diagrams, service information, and manufacturer repair procedures.
  • Strong understanding of automatic-transmission operating principles, hydraulic flow, clutch and geartrain operation, torque-converter function, electronic controls, solenoids, sensors, and communication networks.
  • Ability to accurately prepare repair-order stories and supporting warranty documentation.
  • Ability to operate commercial vehicles safely for testing, verification, and road-test purposes, consistent with company policy and applicable licensing requirements.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform the physical duties of the position, including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, working beneath vehicles, and working in varying shop temperatures.

Nice To Haves

  • Ford Motor Company technician certification, Ford Pro training, or experience servicing Ford commercial vehicles.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certification, especially T2 Diesel Engines, T3 Drivetrain, T4 Brakes, T5 Suspension and Steering, T6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, T7 HVAC, or T8 Preventive Maintenance Inspection.
  • Experience with Ford Super Duty, E-Series, Transit, F-650/F-750, chassis-cab, vocational, municipal, emergency-service, or fleet applications.
  • Experience with Ford diagnostic systems, including Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS), Ford Diagnostic and Repair System (FDRS), or current Ford-approved diagnostic platforms.
  • Experience with Allison 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 Series transmissions, or equivalent current Allison products. Allison training materials specifically cover familiarization, preventive maintenance, and basic diagnostic practices for these major on-highway transmission families.
  • Experience performing transmission overhauls, torque-converter replacement, valve-body repairs, electrical diagnostics, hydraulic pressure testing, and warranty repairs.
  • Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to obtain a CDL if required by the dealership and local regulations.
  • Experience working in a dealership, heavy-duty truck shop, fleet-maintenance facility, municipal garage, vocational-equipment shop, or Allison Authorized service environment.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, overhaul, replace, and maintain Allison automatic transmissions, torque converters, valve bodies, PTO systems, electronic controls, hydraulic circuits, cooling systems, and related driveline components.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic procedures using Allison diagnostic software, Ford diagnostic systems, OEM scan tools, wiring diagrams, service manuals, service messages, technical service bulletins, digital multimeters, pressure gauges, and specialty transmission tools.
  • Diagnose concerns involving shift quality, harsh or delayed shifts, slipping, overheating, fluid contamination, leaks, no-move conditions, warning lamps, solenoid faults, sensor faults, speedometer concerns, communication-network faults, and transmission-control issues.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance, including transmission fluid and filter services, fluid-condition inspections, cooler-system inspections, external leak repairs, adaptation or relearn procedures, and preventive-maintenance recommendations.
  • Remove, install, disassemble, inspect, rebuild, and reassemble Allison transmissions and torque converters in accordance with Allison, Ford, and dealership repair procedures.
  • Verify repairs through post-repair inspections, diagnostic self-tests, fluid-level confirmation, road tests, operational checks, and quality-control procedures before vehicle release.
  • Accurately document diagnostic findings, causal parts, repair procedures, labor operations, parts usage, test results, technician notes, and recommended additional repairs on every repair order.
  • Follow Ford Motor Company, Ford Pro, Allison Transmission, dealership, warranty-administration, and customer-fleet documentation requirements for warranty repairs, policy repairs, parts retention, photographs, and failed-component tracking.
  • Communicate repair status, diagnostic findings, parts requirements, estimated completion times, and additional maintenance recommendations clearly to the commercial service advisor, dispatcher, foreman, warranty administrator, and service management team.
  • Support fleet customers by prioritizing safe, accurate, timely repairs that minimize vehicle downtime and return vehicles to service as quickly as possible.
  • Work effectively on commercial fleet vehicles, including vans, chassis cabs, upfitted units, vocational trucks, utility bodies, municipal vehicles, emergency-service units, shuttle vehicles, and other applicable fleet equipment.
  • Coordinate with Ford-certified technicians, diesel technicians, electrical-diagnostic technicians, body/upfit technicians, mobile-service personnel, and parts personnel to complete complex commercial-vehicle repairs.
  • Maintain current Allison Transmission certification and complete all assigned Ford, Ford Pro, Allison, dealership, and safety training by required deadlines.
  • Participate in technical meetings, manufacturer training, product updates, and continuous-improvement activities intended to improve repair quality, diagnostic speed, safety, and fleet uptime.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; properly use and care for shop equipment, lifts, transmission jacks, scan tools, pressure-testing equipment, and assigned tools.
  • Follow all dealership safety procedures, OSHA requirements, hazardous-material policies, spill-control procedures, waste-fluid disposal requirements, and personal-protective-equipment standards.
  • Mentor apprentice, entry-level, or developing technicians in proper Allison transmission service procedures, diagnostic practices, quality-control expectations, and safe work habits when assigned.
