About The Position

The City and County of Denver is seeking a Facilities Maintenance CUP Superintendent to manage the day-to-day operations of the central utility plant at Denver International Airport. This role ensures the efficient and reliable functioning of critical systems, including managing supervisors and engineers, overseeing maintenance responsibilities for Central Utility Plants, Pre-conditioned Air Plants, Primary Pump Rooms, and Heating, Chill, and Condenser systems. The superintendent will also be responsible for developing and mentoring teams, ensuring compliance with regulatory and environmental standards, implementing safety protocols, forecasting expenses, managing budgets for operational and capital projects, disseminating information to staff, directing performance evaluation standards, providing training opportunities, and establishing preventive maintenance and repair programs for airport facilities and equipment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree desired in mechanical engineering or related field.
• Five [5] or more years of leadership experience supervising skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of buildings and facilities within a Central Utility Plant Environment.
• Five [5] or more years of hands-on experience in operations and maintenance within a Central Utility Plant (CUP) setting, encompassing chiller plants, boiler plants, primary pump rooms, and hydronic systems.
• Proficient in supervising skilled trades personnel engaged in construction, preventive maintenance, and repair tasks related to Central Utility Plant facilities.
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in utility plant operations and management, supported by extensive experience and proficiency in various facets, including comprehensive understanding of Central utility plant operations and management, encompassing steam/hot water and chilled water systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in utility plant operations and management, supported by extensive experience and proficiency in various facets, including principles and operation of gas/oil boilers and chiller plants.
• Familiarity with engineering, design and principles in the operation of mechanical and electrical practices of power plant and utility distribution systems related to high-temperature hot water boilers, large tonnage centrifugal chillers, closed/open water systems, large water-cooling towers, gas turbines, pumps, fans, valves, and piping systems.
• Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
• Four (4) years of experience supervising skilled trades work in the maintenance, repair and construction of buildings and facilities.
• Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience working in an Aviation environment and/or working knowledge of FAA regulations.
• Preferred Licensures/Certifications at time of application OR within 6 months of hire: City and County of Denver Refrigeration Supervisor A, Stationary Engineer certificate, and CFC (Universal EPA License).

Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the central utility plant to ensure efficient and reliable functioning of critical systems.
• Manage Central Utility Plant Supervisors and Building Engineers, performing skilled, high-level maintenance responsibilities for Central Utility Plants, Pre-conditioned Air Plants, Primary Pump Rooms and Heating, Chill and Condenser systems.
• Develop, mentor, coach, and monitor work teams or units, determining priorities, goals, and objectives, and assigning staff to accomplish division goals efficiently and effectively.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental regulations governing CUP utility operations.
• Implement safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks to personnel and equipment, including conducting drills and training exercises for emergency situations.
• Forecast expenses related to construction, preventive maintenance, and repair initiatives.
• Assist in developing and managing budgets for operational expenses, maintenance activities, and capital projects related to plant infrastructure upgrades and improvements.
• Disseminate information to supervisors and building engineer staff regarding planned shutdowns, maintenance activities, work schedules, safety protocols, and project feasibility.
• Direct the development of performance evaluation standards for managed functions within leadership guidelines.
• Provide training opportunities and resources to enhance staff skills and knowledge, including training on equipment operation, safety procedures, and new technologies.
• Establish and maintain preventive maintenance and repair programs for City-owned facilities and equipment at the airport.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
