Central Transporters are responsible for providing and maintaining a safe environment for themselves, the patient, and their co-workers by following established policies and procedures. This includes tasks such as contacting telemetry during moves, completing CPR if needed, attending department and hospital education, using correct body mechanics for patient transfers, cleaning equipment to prevent disease spread, and demonstrating knowledge of pediatric and geriatric patient needs. They must use proper patient identifiers for safety, report hazards, and follow infection control policies, including hand washing and wearing appropriate PPE. Responsibilities also include stocking supplies and linens, ordering supplies, cleaning patient carts and monitoring equipment, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. Transporters are expected to complete work assignments efficiently to meet workload demands and accommodate patient needs. They must follow oxygen usage guidelines, communicate patient condition issues to nurses, prepare patients for transport, and receive hand-off reports from nurses. They are expected to work independently, utilize resources for efficient operations, assist co-workers, and ensure all necessary PACU Phase I documents are present before transporting patients from PACU. Additionally, transporters assist patients and guests with service issues by providing excellent customer service, serving as a resource, and maintaining courtesy and a professional demeanor. This involves inquiring about patient needs, offering comfort measures, greeting patients appropriately, explaining the purpose of their interaction and destination, conversing with patients to provide a friendly atmosphere, providing directions, referring patients to appropriate personnel, and being familiar with all hospital locations. Transporters must also be able to operate equipment safely and efficiently, identify and remove broken equipment from circulation, notify management of safety issues, and complete training on operating wheelchairs, beds, and carts. They are responsible for cleaning soiled equipment and utilizing communication tools appropriately to update dispatchers and healthcare providers. All work assignments must be documented accurately, and schedules, breaks, and lunch periods must be adhered to. Safety events and near misses must be reported, and patient information must be kept confidential and private. Secondary activities include assisting in training, completing equipment moves, and other assigned duties.
