About The Position

The Central Supply Tech - Sterile Processing is responsible for performing decontamination, high level disinfection, and sterilization of medical/surgical and gastroenterology instruments/equipment. This role involves prioritizing and coordinating work for the Operating Room (OR), performing leak tests on endoscopes, assisting with the assembly of case carts for the OR, maintaining event-related sterility, and monitoring instrument repair. The position requires adherence to Standards of Practice, patient confidentiality, and demonstrating flexibility to adjust to fluctuating workloads and departmental demands. The role also involves ordering and stocking supplies, maintaining a ready work area, and reporting suggestions for departmental improvements to management. Compliance with Standard Precautions and disease-specific precautions is essential.

Requirements

Successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians.
Holds and maintains one of the following credentials administered by a nationally accredited central service technician credentialing organization: certified registered central service technician credential; certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential; or a substantially equivalent credential.
Provides evidence that the person was employed or otherwise contracted for the services as a central service technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015.
A central service technician who does not meet the requirements shall have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the certified registered central service technician credential or the certified sterile processing and distribution technician credential.

Responsibilities

Performing decontamination, high level disinfection, and sterilization of medical/surgical and gastroenterology instruments/equipment.

Responding readily to staffing needs, schedule/assignment changes (CP, Endo, and OR).
Referring concerns to the appropriate person for problem resolution through the proper chain of command.

Following Standard Precautions and utilizing disease-specific precautions as per CDC guidelines.

Observing dress code, wearing identification badge while on duty as appropriate, and maintaining a professional appearance at all times.

Maintenance of event-related sterility.
Assisting in the pulling of cases as needed.
Strictly adhering to Central Processing policies & procedures.
Demonstrating knowledge of decontamination of all surgical instruments and endoscopes.
Demonstrating knowledge of all equipment used in sterilization (sterilizers, steris processor, sonic washer, pasteurizer, Sterrad).
Demonstrating understanding of Bowie Dick Test and the steps to take if it is positive for CP or OR.
Demonstrating how to maintain Sterility and Implant Log for all sterilizers, cidex and Steris processors in CPD, OR, and Endoscopy, and keeping documentation current.
Demonstrating how to re-call equipment based on sterility monitoring if needed.
