Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent with no experience
  • Must be able to stand for the entire shift.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 35 pounds.
  • Certification required for employees in PA and NY facilities (MD facilities are excluded).
  • New hires in PA and NY have 18 months from hire to obtain certification.
  • Act 31, 33, 34, 73 clearances with renewal

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Surgical Technician or Sterile Processing program
  • 1 year of experience within UPMC
  • Grandfathered technicians (no certification): Must complete 10 hours of continuing education annually to remain qualified.
  • Certified staff: Must complete 10–12 hours of continuing education annually, as required by the certifying body.
  • Staff pending certification (within 18 months of hire): Continuing education not required until certification is obtained.
  • Employees in a Central Sterile position on or before 12/27/2020 are grandfathered and do not need certification unless moving to a position that requires it.

Responsibilities

  • Train to perform all duties related to the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment—following strict procedures to ensure patient safety.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments manually and mechanically
  • Assemble surgical trays and set up case carts per procedure requirements
  • Monitor and document sterilizer parameters; troubleshoot equipment
  • Maintain inventory and ensure proper storage and distribution
  • Follow infection control, safety, and sterile processing protocols
  • Communicate effectively with team members and other departments
  • Participate in performance improvement and educational programs
  • Demonstrate accountability, time management, and healthy work habits
  • Build positive relationships and mentor others
